The city is situated in the Pee Dee region, which is known for its humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid while winters tend to be mild and wet.

Society Hill has a rich history that dates back to colonial times when settlers first arrived in the area. The town was named after a prominent family who owned much of the land in the area.
