Thomasville, Georgia Population, Hospitals, Airports, and Schools
Thomasville was founded as the county seat of Thomas County in 1826. The city was named for a hero of the War of 1812, General Jett Thomas, who built the first university building in Athens and also built the state capitol in Milledgeville.
Thomasville was a popular, turn of the century, winter resort for wealthy northern families. Non-residents still maintain many large estates and hunting preserves. Many of the estates are listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Susina Plantation Inn and the Lapham-Patterson House.
The Thomas County courthouse is located in Thomasville, and was built in 1858 in the Greek Revival style by architect John Wind. It was remolded in 1888 combining classical and Victorian period elements.
Thomasville is known for its annual Rose Festival and is nicknamed, “The City of Roses”. The city is the home of the “Big Oak”, which has a limb spread of 175 feet. The McKinley Memorial Tree planted in 1896 to honor President William McKinley is also located in Thomasville.
Thomasville’s pride is its Main Street City program. It was one of the first cities to participate in the program. For the past two years, Thomasville has been named one of the top twenty main street cities in the nation. Each year the Main Street City hosts a “Victorian Christmas”. This event brings over 30,000 people downtown to participate in the two-night event.
