Tifton, the county seat of Tift County, was incorporated as a city December 29, 1890, eighteen years after its settlement. The city was originally named Lena for the daughter of the sawmill owner, Henry Tift. One day a worker placed a sign saying “Tifton” and the name stuck.
The Tift County courthouse is located in Tifton and was built in 1912 in the Beaux Arts Classicism style by architect W. A. Edwards.
Tifton is also home of the Agrirama, developed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture in 1976. It is Georgia’s Living History Museum with all the aspects of historical pioneer towns.
The largest Southern Magnolia in Georgia is located in Tifton. This large tree is over 400 years old and has a span of 105 feet.
Grasses developed in Tifton by Glenn Burton, have increased cattle production in Georgia and across the world. Mr. Burton was given the National Medal of Science in 1983 at the White House for his grass breeding activities. It has been estimated that Tifton grasses cover ten million acres of golf courses in the south alone.
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College is located in the City of Tifton. This two-year college is a member of the University System of Georgia and has an enrollment of more than 2,500 students.
