The city is situated at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests. It enjoys a temperate climate with mild winters and hot summers.

Union’s history dates back to 1799 when it was first established as Unionville. In 1842, it was incorporated as Unionville but changed its name to Union in 1873 when it was granted a charter as a town. In 1895, Union became a city and has since grown steadily in population. Politically, Union is part of Spartanburg County and the mayor-council form of government governs the city.
