Moving to Vienna, Georgia
Vienna, the county seat of Dooly County, was named after the capital of Austria. Vienna had a history long before its incorporation on February 8, 1854. The city’s original name was Berrien, which was changed in 1840 to Centerville, then later to its current name.
The Dooly County courthouse was constructed between 1890 and 1892 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also, the Georgia Cotton Museum and the Walter F. George Law Museum are two historical places in Vienna.
The city was the home of U.S. senator (1922-1957) Walter F. George, who served as President Pro Tem of the Senate and chaired the Finance and Foreign Relations Committee.
Vienna hosts the Big Pig Jig, Georgia’s oldest and largest barbecue cook-off. This is a festival of family fun featuring a children’s area, arts & crafts, parade, pageants, golf tournament, a carnival with rides and games, the 5K “Hog Jog” road race, a People’s Choice Tasting Tent, and three nights of big stage shows.
Vienna is located on U.S. 41, in the central region of the state.
