Warrenton, the county seat of Warren County, was incorporated as a town on December 8, 1810. The city and the county are named for General Joseph Warren, a Revolutionary War hero who was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill.
The Burkhalter Home, located in Warrenton, is said to be the first colonial home in Warrenton built around 1778. The Warren County courthouse, built in 1909 and the Confederate Monument are centerpieces of this city.
At one time, Warrenton was on a direct railroad line from Atlanta to Savannah.
Warrenton is located on Highway U.S. 278, which was for many years was used as the highway route from Atlanta to Augusta. U.S. 278, between Warrenton and Thompson, follows the path of the famous Upper Trading Path, an Indian Trail that led from Augusta to Indian settlements as far west as the Mississippi River.
An annual revival takes place every August in Warrenton in a large open tabernacle surrounded by cabins of individual members.
Warrenton participates in the Better Hometown Program run by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. This community development program is a public-private partnership intended to revitalize small communities with populations between 1,000 and 5,000. These cities have access to technical assistance and fiscal resources designed to stimulate downtown revitalization.
