Geographically, it is situated on the north shore of Seneca Lake and is bordered by the Town of Fayette to the east and the Town of Seneca Falls to the west. The terrain is mostly flat with rolling hills in some areas. The climate is typical for this region with cold winters and hot summers.

The history of Waterloo dates back to 1788 when it was established as part of the Central New York Military Tract. It was incorporated as a village in 1829 and became a city in 1901. Politically, it has traditionally been a Republican stronghold but has seen some Democratic victories over the years.
