Whiting, Iowa Population, Hospitals, Airports, and Schools

Whiting, Iowa is a small town located in Monona County in the northwest corner of the state. It lies along the banks of the Little Sioux River and is home to about 600 people. The town was founded in 1856 and was named after a local settler, John Whiting.

The town has a rich history that dates back to the early days of settlement. In its early years, Whiting served as a trading post for settlers living in the area. The town was also an important stop for travelers on their way to Sioux City or Omaha. The railroad eventually came through Whiting in 1872 and it became an important hub for shipping goods throughout Iowa and beyond.

Today, Whiting is still a quiet rural community that boasts several unique attractions. One of these is the historic Whiting Opera House, which was built in 1895 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The opera house hosts events throughout the year, including plays, musical performances, and dances. Other attractions include the Monona County Historical Museum, which has exhibits on local history; several parks; and a golf course at nearby Westfield Country Club.

Whiting also offers plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities for visitors to enjoy during their stay. Fishing can be found along both sides of the Little Sioux River that runs through town, while nearby lakes offer boating and swimming opportunities during warmer months. There are also several hiking trails located around Whiting that lead visitors through wooded areas filled with native plants and wildlife species.

Though small in size, Whiting is filled with charm and hospitality that make it an ideal place for visitors looking to experience small-town life in Iowa’s countryside. Visitors can enjoy unique attractions like its historic opera house or stroll down Main Street to take in all that this quaint community has to offer—from locally owned businesses to one-of-a-kind dining experiences—all while being surrounded by breathtaking scenery from every direction.
